Tension erupted at Oru Divisional Police Station after officers physically assaulted the Legal Director of the Student Union Government (SUG), Comr. Ayoade Jesumbo who had arrived at the station to secure the release of students allegedly being held without lawful justification on March 28, 2026.
The Legal Director, who had gone to the station to facilitate bail for the illegally detained students, was slapped by a police officer upon arrival, a move that drew immediate outrage from the student community.
The situation escalated dramatically when the SUG President, Sen. Kehinde Bamgbose, arrived at the station in solidarity. Officers responded by deploying tear gas against the students who had accompanied the union leadership, and were also reportedly seen removing their firearms from safety, a threatening gesture widely condemned as an attempt to intimidate unarmed students.
The SUG bus, which had transported students to the station, was not spared. Officers attacked the vehicle, shattering its windscreen in what witnesses described as a deliberate act of destruction.
This incident is not an isolated one. The Oru Divisional Police Station has faced repeated allegations of unlawfully detaining individuals from the institution, raising serious concerns about a pattern of abuse of power targeting students in the area.
Student leaders are calling for an immediate investigation into the conduct of officers at the Oru Division, the unconditional release of all detained students, and accountability for those responsible for the assault and property destruction.
