The Library and Information Science Students’ Association of Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye, on Wednesday, March 25, 2026, held the inaugural edition of LISCON 2026, aimed at correcting misconceptions surrounding librarianship and redefining the relevance of Library and Information Science (LIS) in contemporary society.
The event, which took place at the LLTNF Hall, was themed “Who Controls Information Controls Society: The Invisible Power of Library and Information Science.” It attracted students, academic staff, Students union Government , departmental Association and key stakeholders within the university community.
In his welcome address, LISSA President, Adeyinka Boluwatife Samuel, described the conference as a strategic initiative designed to reposition the discipline and enlighten both students and the general public on the evolving role of information professionals.
Delivering the keynote address, Prof. Fehintola Nike Onifade emphasized the critical role of information professionals in shaping decision-making processes across institutions. Speaking on the topic, “The Truth They Didn’t Tell You: Why Information Professionals Run the World from the Background,” she noted that librarianship extends beyond traditional roles and remains central to knowledge management, digital systems, and societal development.
A panel session featuring Dr. Abiodun Olusegun Odunewu and Mr. Franklin further examined the growing importance of LIS in the digital age. Panelists highlighted the need for students to acquire relevant skills, adapt to technological advancements, and take advantage of emerging opportunities within the field.
The session also provided an avenue for student participation, as attendees engaged panelists through questions and contributions.
Among those present at the event were members of staff of the university library, as well as student leaders, including the Secretary General of the Students’ Union Government, Olajire Emmanuel, who represented the union. The Faculty President of the Social Sciences Students’ Association (SOSSA) and departmental Association was also in attendance.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by the Departmental Librarian, Oshisoya Agnes, who appreciated all contributors to the success of the event.
LISCON 2026 marks a significant step toward reshaping perceptions of librarianship, reinforcing its importance as a discipline that plays a vital role in information access, knowledge dissemination, and societal advancement.
