The Association of Student Communicators (ASCOM) held its first budget review meeting under the current administration on Wednesday, March 25, 2026.
The meeting, led by ASCOM President Ayotomiwa Obideyi Abraham, had members of the association and the press in attendance. According to the president, the presence of the media was to promote openness and accountability in the association’s activities.
Speaking in an interview, Abraham stated that there was no secrecy in the association’s operations. “There is nothing we are doing that is secret. Bringing in the media helps us maintain our best behavior in communications and discussions and fosters a better association,” he said. He added that the move aligns with the nature of the department, which is media-focused, and that such exposure helps bring the association into the spotlight.
Explaining the purpose of the budget review, the president said it was to examine the association’s income, expenditure, and proposed financial plans for the tenure. “The main purpose of the budget review is to properly analyze our expenditure, income, and proposed expenditure for the tenure, thereby approving or disapproving some, in line with the powers provided to the SRC through the constitution,” he noted.
When asked if the budget reflects the needs and priorities of students, Abraham responded positively, saying it shows transparency and commitment to office. He added that the review would support the approval of programs that will improve both academic and social experiences of students.
The president further emphasized the importance of budgeting in financial management. “That is why there is a budget, the budget guides how we spend. So as long as we work according to the budget, we are safe,” he said.
