Controversy As FASA SRC Suspends All CEC Members; President Orunmila Rejects Suspension

A mild controversy emerged last week when the Students' Representative Council of the Faculty of Arts Students' Association (FASA) suspended indefinetly, the President, Comrade Akeem Taofeeq (Orunmila) and other members of the central executive council.

The decision was made last Wednesday 9th May, 2018 during an emergency meeting summoned by the legislative arm of the Faculty attended by the Speaker, members of the council, general secretary of the association and other observers. The President and other members of the Central executive council were notably absent.

The Speaker of the house, Rt. Hon Egbeyemi Eniola who confirmed the development to Campus Mirror said all members of the executives has been suspended. However, he said the suspension is not unconnected to various allegations that has been levied on the Orunmila led administration.

He mentioned numerous offenses which include negligence of the constitution, embezzelement and misappropriation of funds, organization of false committee and disrespectful behaviour to the SRC.

The Speaker further warned the executives to put a stop to every activity or action relating to their offices or risk themselves for impeachment.

Meanwhile, President Orunmila, while reacting to the above assertion , he described the suspension and allegations laid by the SRC on the CEC members as wrong and unethical.

He also noted that the executives were not duly informed of the sitting.

"My general secretary was at the meeting just because he came across a WhatsApp message not because he received an official message from the SRC. The CEC was not officially summoned to the meeting. Though he (the Speaker) tried calling me, I was in class so there was misinformation in that context because at first he told me that there will be a meeting and not a sitting of the SRC. The meeting will be held at Oru town hall and not PS. I tried calling him and all he said is that the suspension is final.

"I want you to know that the suspension is not right. Fine, the President has done something wrong, but that does not call for the suspension of the whole administration. Who is there to take charge? Therefore this suspension is not valid", Orunmila said.

On issues of financial misappropriation, Orunmila admitted fault in withdrawing the sum of N700,000 into his personal account. However, he said he has apologized for it and noted that the money was disbursed accordingly to the remaining executives.

On a final note, He said; "My administration will function and will continue to function till the house is dissolved. I want to tell all FASAites that we are sorry for the rift that happened between the SRC and the faculty executives."
