Mass Communication have been crowned champions of the 2026 Student Union Government (SUG) Freshers’ Cup after a narrow 1–0 victory over Transport Management in Friday’s final at Attacker Stadium.
In a keenly contested encounter watched by a lively student crowd, both sides displayed discipline and intensity, but Mass Communication made their moment count, converting the decisive chance that settled the tie.
Transport Management held their ground for most of the match but were unable to find an equaliser. The physical nature of the game saw one of their players cautioned for a late challenge.
Man of the Match, Nkwazema Gabriel, said the team’s unity proved decisive in a high-pressure final. “It feels superb. This is my second time, and it just feels nice,” he said.
“Finals are very difficult, but we knew we had to stay together as a team to win.”
Head coach Abdul Azeez Ayomide described the victory as historic for the department. “Four years ago, the team reached the final but came second. I’m very delighted we achieved this,” he said.
Ayomide credited the triumph to preparation and discipline, adding that the players worked on their weaknesses ahead of the tournament.
Captain Adenekan Abdul Haleem, a fresher, said the win marked a memorable start to his campus football journey. “It’s my first tournament in the school, and it’s a big win for me,” he said.
He added that the team kept their approach simple and followed instructions from the bench.
“We played like professionals and stuck to the coach’s plan. They tried, but the better team won.”
Awards and medals were presented after the match, with notable attendees including department president Ayotomiwa Obideyi (Aso-Rock) and Dr. Atewolara Odule.
