The Department of History and Diplomatic Studies (HDS) recorded a remarkable double triumph on Friday, June 5, 2026, emerging champions in both the FASA Dean’s Cup football competition and the FASA Inter-Departmental Debate Competition.
The football final, held at Attacker Stadium, saw HDS face defending champions, the Department of English Language, in a highly anticipated encounter. Entering the competition as four-time champions, HDS delivered an impressive performance to secure victory and successfully add another title to its growing record of achievements, making it the fifth time the department has been crowned FASA Dean’s Cup champions.
Beyond the football pitch, the department also distinguished itself in the academic arena by winning the FASA Inter-Departmental Debate Competition. The victory underscored the department’s commitment to excellence in both extracurricular and intellectual pursuits.
The twin successes have been widely celebrated by students and staff of the department, who described the achievement as a testament to the hard work, dedication, and resilience of all those involved. Members of the football team were commended for their teamwork and determination throughout the tournament, while the debate representatives received praise for their eloquence, confidence, and outstanding representation of the department.
Speaking on the achievement, the President of HDS, Victor Akinwale, attributed the department’s success to a shared commitment to excellence among students, athletes, debaters, and departmental executives.
“The biggest factor behind this remarkable double achievement was our unity of purpose,” he said. “Our players, debaters, executives, and every student who came out to support were all committed to representing HDS with excellence.”
Akinwale noted that the victories were not a matter of chance but the product of sustained effort and discipline.
“Our success in both sports and academics was not a coincidence. It was the result of hard work, discipline, dedication, and the collective belief that HDS can compete and excel at the highest level,” he added.
Reaffirming the department’s reputation within the faculty, he stated that HDS has consistently upheld a tradition of excellence.
“We believe that we are the Pride of FASA, and winning is not new to us. This victory makes it the fifth time that HDS has been crowned FASA Dean’s Cup Champions. This is the Victor-Led Administration, and indeed, we are THE VICTORS.”
Students who turned out in large numbers to support the department during both competitions were also acknowledged for their encouragement and unwavering support.
The double triumph further strengthens HDS’s reputation as one of the leading departments in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASA), demonstrating its ability to excel in both academic and sporting engagements.
Akinwale concluded by giving thanks to God for the success, describing the achievement as a collective victory for the entire department.
