Do you aspire to become a leader?
Leadership at every levels require passion, sacrifice and vision. It comes with a sense of responsibility and the ability to take up the responsibility. However, most people only pay attention to the bright side of leadership which includes; power, influence, recognition etcetera. But ignore the other side of the coin which is the reality.
The Student Union Government (SUG) is a representative body for students at a school or university, usually made up of student representatives who are elected by their peers ,with the purpose of representing the interest of the students and help them with a voice in decisions that affect their education.
The Olabisi Onabanjo University SUG Movement which started in 1988( five years after the institution started it’s operation ) have witnessed the emergence of powerful and sagacious Comrades, who at different point in time served as the Aluta mouthpiece and advocates for the Student Body.
Leading over 25 thousand students, advocating for them and as well making their voices heard is not a piece of cake, as it takes selflessness and “ruggedity” to be the “Aluta 001”. Also, going through several stages before eventually emerging as the SUG President; from the declaration of intent stage, to the campaign stage, then to the election stage, really takes courage and acidity.
In addition, resolving and tending to different problems and issues faced by over 25 thousand students from the four campuses requires a high level of emotional intelligence. Meetings up on meetings, and still have to strike a balance between academics and responsibilities. They are all times communicate with the students , serving as the intermediary between them and the management.
Some SUG Presidents have made an indelible mark, they have left an imprint on the people’s heart, with a legacy that will endure for generations. OOU, SUG have witnessed 36 administrations, led by sagacious Leaders; the likes of Rx Neyo (2015/16), Comrade Tayo(2016/17), Dr. Williams (2017/18), Comrade Kempes(2018/19), Senator Pablo(2019/20), Senator Modesty(2020/21), Comrade Feyi(2021/22), Senator Pizzle, who in September 28, 2023 was also elected into the SUG Presidents Hall of Fame, and others, are people of that have made an impact that can never be forgotten in the history of OOU SUG.
Though,a tree cannot make a forest,and these notable Presidents could not have reached the pinnacle of success without their Executives. However, the presidents are the face of the franchise,they beat the responsibility for the team’s success and failure. That is why it is always tagged as “…Sen. Pizzle Led Administration “.
Ultimately, to be an SUG President is to embark on an extraordinary journey of service, leadership and personal growth. It requires passion, vision, communication skills, and the ability to stand in the face of adversity. As we all celebrate the exceptional people who have taken up this mantle, let’s always recognize the challenges they overcame, the sacrifice they made, and the long lasting impact they made on our University Community. Their leadership serve as inspiration, not only for the future SUG Presidents, but also to every Leaders out there. And above all, let’s always appreciate their efforts in upholding the honour and glory of Aluta!
