Nigeria Economics Student Association (NESA), Olabisi Onabanjo University held its general elections for the Central Executive Council (CEC) members on Thursday, February 15, 2024.
The results revealed Olaniyi Eniola as the newly elected president of NESA, having run unopposed, alongside Eniola Olabanji Oluwatimileyin, a 300-level student, securing the position of vice president.
The election which took place opposite the economics department, witnessed a significant turnout from the department students. While several positions, including president, vice president, general secretary, welfare director, and librarian, had uncontested candidates, the rules dictated by the NESA Electoral Committee indicates that a candidate must secure at least one-third of the votes to be declared the winner.
However, the race for positions such as sports secretary, social secretary, financial secretary, and public relations officer was fiercely contested. Ogunlesi Kehinde emerged victorious as the newly elected Sports Secretary, securing 140 votes, surpassing Abdullah Abdullah's 66 votes.
The position of Financial Secretary was won by Ogbebor Joy Deborah, who secured 109 votes against Sowoolu Temitope's 77 votes.
Interestingly, the position of social secretary ended in a deadlock, with Adeyemi Ayuba and Ojo Gift receiving an equal number of votes, each securing 105 votes. This tie has developed an intriguing situation, leaving the association to determine how to resolve this unique scenario.
