The Department of Geography, Olabisi Onabanjo University celebrates its 40th anniversary on the 7th of November 2023. The anniversary public lecture titled, “Geography, Spatial Analysis, and Physical Planning: A Panacea for Sustainable Development” was held at the faculty of Social Sciences building on the main campus, Ago Iwoye Ogun state.
At the event, the Vice Chancellor of Olabisi Onabanjo University - Prof Ayodeji Agboola, Deputy vice chancellor academic – Prof. Olatundun Oderinde, the Deputy Vice Chancellor Admin – Professor Charles Adekoya, the Chief Administrative Registrar – Mr Femi Ogunwomoju, Dean of Faculty of Social Sciences, the head of Geography Department, head of Mass Communication department and other respectable people were present at the celebration.
The head of the department, Dr W.O Otun gave the welcoming address before the public lecture. The guest speaker of the day is an alumnus of the department, who graduated in 1987( as part of the second graduating set of the geography department). Town planner Oloruntola Olufemi Micheal who is currently the permanent secretary of service policies and strategic office of the head of the civil service of the federation started the lecture by asking the students of the department of geography “What is the greatest challenge of our country."
Omolade Owoseni said that “ the greatest challenge in Nigeria is “corruption”. Other students answered that the greatest challenge is “political leadership and literacy”. Town planner Oloruntola Olufemi Micheal answered the question he asked, stating that “ corruption is not the greatest problem, the biggest problem of Nigeria is to get the future of Nigeria to believe in Nigeria”
