OOU: SOSSA Lawmakers Suspend VP Babajide, Set Up Five-Man Panel Over Impeachment Petition.

By Faruq Olaegbe

The Students' Representative Council (SRC) of the Faculty of Social Sciences Students' Association (SOSSA), Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), has suspended the association's Vice President, Comrade Adedeji Babajide and constituted a five-man panel to investigate allegations of constitutional breach and dereliction of duty levelled against him.

The ruling, which took immediate effect, was delivered on Friday, June 19, 2026, and signed by the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Agboola Johnson Ayomide and the Clerk, Rt. Hon. Adetunji Zaynab Adesewa, following the House's consideration of a petition filed against Babajide two days earlier.

The petition, dated June 17, 2026, and titled "Petition for the Impeachment and Removal from Office of Comrade Adedeji Babajide on Grounds of Constitutional Breach and Dereliction of Duty," was presented before the House alongside exhibits and other supporting documents, which lawmakers said they examined carefully before reaching their decision.

In its ruling, the House cited Section 37 of the SOSSA Constitution, which governs the discipline of Executive Council members, noting that the allegations disclosed matters requiring formal investigation. Section 37(1) of the Constitution states that "all members of the Executive should be disciplined and carry out their official duties efficiently and with strict adherence to the Constitution, laws passed by the SRC and resolutions of Congress," adding that disciplinary action shall be taken against any erring member in line with the provision.

Following Section 37(4) of the SOSSA constitution, the House constituted a five-man Investigative Panel to conduct what it described as a "thorough, fair and impartial investigation" into the allegations, with a mandate to submit a comprehensive report of its findings, observations and recommendations within a prescribed period.

The panel comprises Rt. Hon. Adetunji Zainab Adesewa (Political Science Constituency) as Chairperson, with Hon. Okubanjo Ahmed (Psychology Constituency), Hon. Amusa Adebayo Moses (Library and Information Science Constituency), Hon. Jinadu Moshood Motunrayo (Sociology Constituency) and Hon. Owolabi Oluwateniola Happiness (Geography Constituency) serving as members of the panel.

The House said, Babajide's suspension was made following Section 37(5)(b) of the SOSSA Constitution, which empowers it to determine the duration and conditions of any suspension imposed under the disciplinary process and is meant to preserve the integrity of the investigative process and forestall any interference with the panel's work. Lawmakers, however, stressed that the suspension "shall not be construed as a finding of guilt" but would operate solely as an interim measure pending the outcome of the investigation.

The House also directed Babajide to, within 24 hours of the ruling, hand over all Association and Faculty properties, documents, official records, correspondence and other materials in his custody as Vice President to the President of the Association.

It further ruled that the suspension would remain in force pending the submission, consideration and determination of the panel's report and directed the Clerk of the House to immediately communicate the ruling to Babajide, the Executive Council and other concerned parties for compliance. The House maintained that the proceedings were "not intended to prejudge the respondent" but were aimed solely at ensuring accountability, transparency, constitutional compliance and  preservation of the integrity of the Association.
