THE SUTC ANNOUNCE AN INCREMENT IN PRICE OF TRANSPORTATION

By Oluwadamilola Tinuola

Following the declaration by the newly inaugurated President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, that fuel subsidy is gone, there has been an expected increase in the prices, and scarcity of fuel in the nation, and drivers have had no choice but to increase the rate of fares for transporting and conveying people to their various destinations.

The Olabisi Onabanjo University community is not left out of this dilemma as drivers of commercial buses responsible for conveying students from designated parks and garages to school at a certain amount, have also increased the rate for boarding the buses and cars.

After a meeting by the Representatives of the school management, OOU SUG President, OOU SHS Senate President, and members of the OOU SUG transport committee, with the leadership of the bus drivers and keke napeps operating within the school, it was decided that the costs for transportation will increase subsequently. The OOU SUG Transport Chairman, HON.Tomori Abdullateef Adeyemi (LAFTOM) through the SUG Transport Committee General Secretary, SEN. Omotayo Habeeb Bayode, released a memo to this effect, on Friday night, June 2nd.

In the memo released which has since sparked reactions from the generality of the students, the cause for the increase was attributed to the increase in fuel costs in the past few days which has affected various sectors including transportation, and hence the need to adjust the prices of these fares significantly. It was stated further that all the prices have been increased by 100 Naira and will take effect from Monday, June 5, 2023, which will then see Oru to PS become 300 naira as against the previous rate of 200 naira, Pepsi Garage to PS will become 250 naira as opposed to 150 nairas, Mini Campus garage to PS will also experience a price change to become 250 naira, as opposed to the usual price of 150 naira.

Napeps from the school gate to anywhere within the school become 150 naira, and from the school gate to the park, becomes 100 naira, as it is also for moving anywhere within the school.

However, in a bid to mitigate the effect on the students, the Chairman states that there would be a reduction in the passenger capacity per seat. This will see the new seating arrangement allow for a maximum of three (3 ) passengers per seat for the white buses and cabs, and for the SUG buses, a maximum of four (4) passengers per seat, in a bid to ensure "a safer and more efficient transportation experience for everyone."

The committee however expresses its apology for the inconveniences caused in lieu of the change, whilst also appreciating the continued cooperation and understanding of the students in this period.
