ASO ROCK EMERGES ASCOM PRESIDENT-ELECT

The race for the ASCOM ’26 departmental election reached a conclusion on Wednesday evening, as Ayotomiwa Obideyi pka Aso Rock, a 400-level Mass Communication student, emerged victorious over Tomiwa Oyegunle, pka Tommy.

According to results released by the ASCOM Electoral Committee (ASEC), Aso Rock polled 115 votes, while Tommy secured 106 votes.

Below is the full result of ASCOM ’26 Departmental Election. 

President: Ayotomiwa Obideyi 116 votes wins over Tomiwa Oyegunle 105

Vice President: Precious Adeyemi was unopposed

General Secretary Adetoro Victor was unopposed

Public Relations Officer (PRO): Olajide Fatimah 150 votes won over Aeesha 64 votes

Assistant General Secretary (AGS): Mariam Shote was unopposed

Financial Secretary: Oludipe Bukola was also unopposed

Social Director: Oyebiyi Barnabas 168 votes won over  Shobande Faridah 45 votes

Positions like Welfare Director, sports Director, and librarian are vacant. 

Speaking shortly after the announcement, Aso Rock, a former librarian and financial secretary of the department, expressed gratitude to his colleagues for their renewed confidence in his leadership.

“This victory belongs to every ASCOMITE who believes in unity and progress. We’ll build a communication family that truly represents everyone’s voice,” he said.

He also commended Tommy for his persistence and contributions to the department.

Tommy congratulated Aso Rock and pledged his continued support for the department’s development.

Observers described the election held at the Mass Communication boardroom as “peaceful but highly competitive,” with students turning out in impressive numbers to cast their votes.

The Electoral Committee Chairperson, Hon. Peter Adesanya, lauded all contestants for conducting themselves maturely and for upholding the spirit of sportsmanship.

“We’ve conducted this election to the best of our abilities, ensuring it was free, fair, and devoid of violence or malpractice,” he stated.

“The fact that ASCOM continues to hold credible elections reflects the true dividends of democracy, fairness, representation, and progress. It’s clear that ASCOM is moving forward, and it’s upward from here.”

Adesanya further revealed that the Students’ Representative Council (SRC) election will hold later this week or early next week, before the official swearing-in ceremony of the new administration.
