Residents were thrown into panic today, April 9, after a devastating fire razed the home of a well-known local artisan, identified as Shako, destroying property worth millions of naira.
The incident occurred behind Foursquare Church, around Mechanic Junction, along the street before Lagos Embassy on Mini Campus Road.
Shako, widely regarded in the community for assisting students with repairs ranging from furniture fixing to electrical work, lost his entire home in the inferno. Eyewitnesses said the fire, believed to have been caused by an electrical spark, spread rapidly, leaving little or nothing to salvage.
His wife, who is reportedly pregnant, and their child were safely evacuated before the fire escalated. No casualties were recorded.
Students in the area reportedly made frantic efforts to contain the blaze, fetching water in buckets, but the intensity of the fire overwhelmed their efforts.
“All we could do was try our best with water, but it was too much,” a resident said.
Items destroyed in the fire include the family’s belongings, a motorcycle (Okada), generator, and cooking gas, all of which were burnt to ashes.
Residents lamented the absence of firefighting services in the area, noting that no emergency responders arrived to assist during the incident.
“There is no fire service here. We were left on our own,” another eyewitness added.
The incident has once again raised concerns about the lack of emergency response infrastructure in Ago-Iwoye and the urgent need for improved safety measures to prevent and manage such disasters.
Community members have begun calling for support for the affected family, as they now face the challenge of rebuilding their lives from scratch.
