The annual Faculty League Association (FLA) tournament got underway in style, with two fixtures setting the tone for what promises to be an exciting competition.
In the day’s most dominant performance, the Faculty of Education (EDU) delivered a commanding 4–1 victory over the Faculty of Science (SCIENCE), showcasing attacking strength and early title intent.
Meanwhile, in a tighter contest, the Faculty of Administration and Management Sciences (FAMS) secured a narrow 1–0 win over the Social Sciences Student Association (SOSSA). Despite missing several key players, FAMS showed resilience and discipline to grind out the result.
The breakthrough came from Peter Allen, whose decisive goal earned him Man of the Match and gave FAMS a crucial opening win. Reflecting after the match, Allen described the goal as a perfect way to begin the tournament.
“It feels great to score at the start of the competition,” he said. “Winning the first match sets the tone for the rest of the team.”
He also noted that the team relied more on effort than tactics.
“There wasn’t anything special about today’s approach. We just stuck to our style, worked hard, and gave our best even without a full squad.”
FAMS captain Oyinkansola Sodiq emphasized motivation as a key factor in the victory.
“All I did was encourage the players,” he said.
Admitting he had doubts before kickoff, Sodiq expressed gratitude for the outcome.
“I honestly didn’t expect us to win because many players were unavailable. We had to adjust the team, and I thought it might end in a draw. But the players stayed confident and gave everything.”
He added that simplicity was their strength on the pitch.
“We didn’t overcomplicate things. We just played our normal game and trusted ourselves,” he said confidently. “We believe we can go all the way and win the cup.”
Sodiq also acknowledged SOSSA’s effort while reaffirming FAMS’ ambition.
“They played well and showed they’re a strong side, but we’re focused on the trophy.”
With only two matches played on opening day, the FLA has already delivered excitement, goals, and early statements of intent, setting the stage for an intense battle in the rounds ahead.
