The Department of Mass Communication, Olabisi Onabanjo University, held its second departmental Congress meeting of the department today , November 26, 2025, at the department's Large Lecture Theatre, Main Campus, Ago Iwoye.
The meeting, launched in the previous session, was the second of its kind in the department. It started at 12 pm, with full attendance from undergraduate mass communication students and academic staff.
The Head of the Department, Dr. Semiu Bello, while giving his speech, disclosed the unbundling of the department into five distinct programmes, namely Advertising, Broadcasting, Film and Multi-media studies, Journalism, and Public Relations. He acknowledged that the Head of the faculty, Professor Ayodele Odulami, whom he referred to as the "Father of Mass Communication", was unavoidably absent and he sent his greetings.
Following this, the Departmental Examination Officer, Dr. Niyi Akinkoya, took the floor, addressing students on the importance of adhering to examination ethics. He invited the course representatives of the 200 to 500 levels (weekday students) to reiterate the examination rules. Key points included the need to avoid malpractice and arrive at examination venues at least 30 minutes early.
Dr. Emmanuel Olumiji then spoke about ASCOM (Association of Student Communicators). He introduced the newly elected executives and discussed the membership dues, set at ₦1,500, urging students to comply. The new officials were presented with certificates of office presented by the HOD; they were reminded to hand over their responsibilities two weeks before the Rain Semester, marking the end of their tenure after a year.
Dr. Kamoru Salaudeen also spoke on the need for professional dressing among student communicators, he emphasize that students must learn to present themselves appropriately in preparation for careers in the media industry.
In a major academic update, Dr. Akinwalere announced that the Centre for Continuing Education (CCED) will now run as a four-year programme. Students from the weekday stream (formerly part-time) will now be able to take courses alongside full-time students.
The congress also recognized the presence of David Oribowale-Praise, former president of ASCOM, as well as the efforts of Dr. (Mrs.) Adesola Bello, who was commended for her effective handling of the diploma students under her care.
Certificates were also awarded to the newly elected Association of Communicators (ASCOM) executives .
The event ended with a vote of thanks delivered by Obideyi Emmanuel, pka Aso Rock, the newly elected ASCOM president.
