Olabisi Onabanjo University's former Vice Chancellor, Professor Olayinka Olatokunbo, passed away at the age of 91 in Ijebu Igbo, yesterday, December 2nd, 2025.
Professor Layi Ogunkoya is a Nigerian fluvial geomorphologist and educator. Appointed a Professor in 1995 at the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University), he later served as the Interim Vice-Chancellor of Olabisi Onabanjo University, where he played a key role in restoring normalcy to the institution. His notable career includes stints as a visiting scholar in England and as University Liaison Coordinator for the Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria.
Hon Odusanya Omobolaji, the executive chairman of Ijebu North Central local government, has extended his sincere condolences to the family, friends, and Ijebu-Igbo community on the passing of Professor Layi Ogunkoya.
Accompanied by his cabinet members, Bolaji visited the deceased's residence yesterday to offer prayers. He noted that the late professor was affectionately known as "Baba Ewe" due to his philanthropic efforts in empowering the community's youth. Bolaji prayed for the repose of Professor Ogunkoya's soul, who was also the pioneer president of the council of Ijebu-Igbo elders, and urged strength for those mourning his loss.
