A 300-level student, who wishes to remain anonymous, has sparked a conversation about the state of social events in Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU).
The student, who sent a message to Senator Empress of the Faculty of Education, expressed concerns that social events in OOU are mostly parties, urging Social Directors to organize conferences, seminars, webinars, training on career development, motor skills, leadership training, and more.
In an interview with OOU Campus Mirror, the student said, "I was checking through a friend status, I've been monitoring her status since January she's a public speaker, a content writer, a compere, SDG advocate. I've seen multiple flyers coming up almost every week. She schools lautech and most of those events were collaboration with the SUG, JCI, Google and so many more". She said that she has not seen a flyer coming from the SUG or from any member of any department or any faculty posting about Seminars, Training, Webinars, Workshop, Conferences on development, Career training, Professional or Corporate event except from JCI.
The Social Director, Comr. Patane Joshua Victory, responded to the student's concerns, commending her efforts and concern for student welfare.
He said, "It would interest me to first of all disregard a statement; most of the parties that are being posted and circulated around by the TVs or any PRs are not from the office of the SUG SOCIAL DIRECTOR".
He clarified that most parties posted on social media are not organized by the SUG Social Director's office and explained that a memo was released to regulate parties on campus, assuring that efforts are being made to include seminars, competitions, conferences, and more in the social calendar.
The Social Director mentioned several upcoming events, including OOU Got Talent, OOU Beauty Contest, OOU White Party, Business Conference, OOU Elite Prom, and Quiz and Debate competitions organized by the Vice President's office. He assured that the SUG is working towards providing a balanced social experience for students.
He shared his conversation with Dr. Amarachi Amusi, an influencer popularly known as "Ashmusy" on Instagram, he stated, "Earlier today in a conversation with a popular influencer, Dr. Amarachi, I was informing her about a business conference that I intend to organize. And the dream behind this was to ensure that most students are business oriented after this program."
In his final remark, he said, "The summary of all is this, there are lots of program in stock for us as planned from the office of the SUG SOCIAL DIRECTOR, Comr. Patane Joshua Victory and this events ranges from; OOU GOT TALENT, OOU BEAUTY CONTEST, OOU WHITE PARTY, BUSINESS CONFERENCE, OOU ELITE PROM and even more. Moreso, there are a lot of events coming from the office of the Vice Presidents, like Quiz and debate competitions. So be rest assured that we’ve taken note of all these and we’ll work towards it."
