The Association of Students Communication (ASCOM) and Performing Arts Student Association (PASA) of Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU) Ago Iwoye, Ogun State, came together to present the drama production titled "The Madness that Cures My Land" on the 29th of February 2024.
The event, held at the Mass Communication Hall at the Permanent Site (PS), commenced at 2 PM, with an entrance fee of five hundred naira (#500) for students.
Written by Ola Awakan and directed by Ifeanyi Eziukwu, the production was powered by Artwax Communication and Just Theater House.
The storyline revolved around a professor entangled in an affair with a mentally unstable woman, unbeknownst to his assistant, David. Meanwhile, a character named Shabeliers, feigning blindness, engaged in street begging alongside her daughter, only to be threatened with the kidnapping of a familiar madwoman, who turned out to be her own mother.
The climax of the production unveiled the hidden truths, leaving the community to ponder the consequences of their actions. As Baba Ijebu aptly remarked, "The wickedness that men do, stays with them."
Dr. Akinola, the Head of the Department of Mass Communication, commended the production, particularly applauding the large turnout of students. He remarked, "The drama was very cultured; it teaches that what goes round comes round, what you don't want, don't do it to others."
Dr. Akinola encouraged students to explore storytelling, assuring them of the school's support in developing their skills and talents. He concluded by expressing gratitude to the presidents of Mass Communication and Performing Arts for their efforts in organizing the event.
Many students shared positive reviews of the production. A 100-level Mass Communication student expressed, "This is my first drama in the university, and I love it. I learned that I shouldn't be fake and should be contented with what I have."
Similarly, a 300-level Performing Arts student stated, "This is one of the best dramas I've watched in this school, and I really learned a lot."
