The Olabisi Onabanjo University on December 29, 2023 released a memo that announced the commencement of the 2023/2024 academic session, which will kick start on Thursday, January 4th, 2024. Freshers are to start registration online on Thursday, January 4th while returning students lecture will commence on Monday, January 8th, 2024.
The university management however stated in a public notice, reasons for the increase in the tuition fee which start from #190,000 above depending on the course. The university management said it was as a result of several discussions and negotiations between the management of the university, the Student Union Government, staff union and stakeholders within and outside the University.
In objection to the memo released by the school management, the Students Union President, Ogunsanya Bamidele Peter said that “no agreement has being reached between the student union and the university management as no documents were signed or oral consent for proposed changes ( increase in tuition fee and online lecture) by the University management.”
According the university management, the institution
has devised several alternatives to cushion the impact of this increase. Yearly bursary planned by the government to be paid to indigent students, scholarship schemes and a work study programme which has been put in place by the University management.
In a turn of event, the Student Union president has urged all students not to attend any school activities until further directives are provided by the student Union. The Union in a statement further stated that online or virtual lectures implemented with good intentions have caused more bad than good with challenges like poor network connectivity, lack of access to necessary resources and the overall inefficiency of online or virtual classes.
The Union also urge and call on all students to resume back to the school environment January 3rd, 2024 in other to prepare and strategize for the next step in ensuring that the students’ voices are not only heard but also respected.
