The accident which claimed the lives of three (A part-time student of accounting in OOU: Balogun Azeez, A tricycle driver, and a 7-year-old primary school pupil) happened at the early hours of yesterday at 7:47 am. We learnt a student of OOU due to over speeding lost control along the Oru-Ijebu Igbo road and crashed into an oncoming tricycle.
The SUG President, Welfare Director, and also the Financial Secretary of the union went to the scene of the accident, accompanied by Mr Alamu (an ICT staff) to access the damage of the accident. They then proceeded to the Oru Police Station to make sure none of our students were found around the premises of the station as indigenes were aggrieved already.
The leadership of the union was immediately informed and we swung into action. We were able to rescue the student driver was rescued from the aggrieved crowd, after which he was taken to the police station by police officers.
All the dead bodies were taken to the Ijebu-Igbo mortuary and members of the aggrieved tricycle drivers association began a protest threatening to start going violent with any OOUite spotted. However, thank God, we were able to control the situation.
As soon as we got the report, Sen. Pizzle put a call through to the school management and the DPOs to notify them of the incident and to ensure the safety of our students who are having their Teaching Practice Exercise and Industrial Training at Oru and Ijebu-Igbo axis.
The DVC Admin and the CSO responded to the situation and went to the Ebumawe's palace with other executives who were on ground to notify the Ebumawe of Ago-Iwoye of the incident. They then moved to Oru-Ijebu police station to see the DPO of the Police Division.
We also reached out to Awa-Ilaporu and Ijebu-Igbo Police Officers to make sure peace was restored as many of our students were on transit via those routes yesterday.
Knowing that a few of our students were on IT and TP around the Ijebu-Igbo axis, we sent out urgent and emergency messages to them as we started the arrangement of Six ASCODO and two SUG buses for their evacuation which ended at exactly 5:45 pm yesterday.
We mourn with the families of the victims involved in the fatal accident and we frown with all sincerity against overspeeding, breaking of traffic rules, and all other unruly behaviors from a few of our students who are car owners.
We would like to inform all TP and IT students in IJEBU-IGBO, Oru, and Awa to please stay at home for the remaining days of this week till peace is restored. In addition, all OOUites should please avoid late-night movement till further notice.
We use this medium to also appreciate all OOU media personalities and Campus establishments who were actively involved in responding to this unfortunate incident with adequate information regarding our response and activities, restoring normality to our student community.
WE WOULD LIKE TO STATE CATEGORICALLY, THAT OVER-SPEEDING WILL BE TREATED LIKE A CRIMINAL OFFENCE HENCEFORTH.WE ARE AND WE WILL BE WATCHING YOU!
We urge all car owners to please desist from breaking traffic rules, especially with regards to speed limitations. Our administration is concerned about the safety of all students. May the departed rest in peace.
