ASCOM HOLDS LEGISLATIVE SUMMIT, LAUNCHES REVIEWED CONSTITUTION

The mainden edition of the ASCOM legislative Summit ‘26 happened at the Large Lecture Theatre, department of Mass Communication, on May 19th, 2026. Hosted by Rt Hon Moses Daniel, speaker of the current ASCOM Students' Representative Council, the event was themed “The Communicating Legislature” with the topic “Leadership, Accountability, Representation and future of student governance.”

Guests and speakers in attendance included Mr Kehinde Isinkaye, Dr Odule Atelewolara; a senior lecturer in the department, Ayotomiwa Obideyi p.k.a Aso Rock; the current president of the Association, and some alumni members of the prestigious department in persons of Mr Shomuyiwa Sherrifdeen p.k.a Eyinju, Mr Kayode Awojobi and Mr Wale Daniels, an Emeritus President of the associatio.

The speakers; Mr Kehinde Isinkaye, Ayotomiwa Obideyi and Dr Odule Atelewolara all spoke about the essence of effective leadership and governance through accountability and better representation as a student leader, or even a stakeholder in the department. According to Ayotomiwa, “accountability is a culture you must live by as change and accountability begins from us student leaders.” Dr Odule also emphasized on the importance of making leadership inclusive and participatory, communicating policies clearly and also carrying the members of the department along in the governance. 

According to Rt. Hon. Moses, hosting the Legislative Summit was driven by the urge to promote effective and efficient student governance, and also to make the legislative arm as important as the executive arm in the department. He further stated that following this event, ASCOMites should expect more transparency, fairness and balance. 

Another major highlight of the event was the constitution launch. Having being reviewed by the previous SRC led by Com. Sobayo Joy, the current administration decided it was important that every ASCOMite has a hard copy of the constitution. The launch was declared open by Mr Shomuyiwa Sherrifdeen, a former SRC chairman of the department, who noted that the ASCOM constitution was last reviewed during the 2017-2018 administration. 

Ayotomiwa noted that “the constitution was launched mainly to enable all ASCOMite know their constitutional rights, to ensure checks and balances in the association, and also to build a legacy for the incoming administration, who might have a thing or two to add to the constitution for the benefit of the entire association. Rt Hon Moses also further stated that there was need for more accountability in the department, stating that “not that there is no form of accountability in place, but we need a stronger one, where the association and department representatives can be more accountable to ASCOMites and also we need to promote fairness, hence the constitution launch.” 

There was a presentation of certificates to deserving SRC members of the 24/25 administration by Rt Hon Moses, a constitution launch with tokens from some stakeholders and alumni present, and the event officially came to a close with a closing remark from Rt. Hon Com Sobayo Joy.
