ASCOM HOSTS INTER-LEVEL DEBATE

The Association of Student Communicators (ASCOM), under the Aso Rock-led administration, held its inter-level debate competition on Thursday, April 16, 2026, at the Large Lecture Theatre, New Faculty (LLTNF), Department of Mass Communication.

The debate, which is in its second edition, was first introduced last year by the Emeritus Vice President Academics of the association, Onasanya Michael Olaoluwa.

The competition featured two rounds. The first round was contested between 100-level and 200-level students, while the second round featured 300-level and 400-level students. Each level was represented by two participants. The 100-level student was Abolade Oreoluwa Mariam, and Olaniyi Azeez Tunde. While 200 level students was Ismai Doyinsola Islamiyat, and Adebayo Oluwagbemiga Adeyemi.

For the second round, the first speaker for 300evel student was Adeshina Abdullahi and the second speaker was Muhammadu Jeremiah.

The 400 level first speaker was Babalola Raheemot Odunayo and the second speaker was Odebo Oluwagbemileke Damilare.

The motion for the first round was, “Professional journalism is losing public credibility to digital creators.” The 100-level students opposed the motion, while the 200-level students supported it.

In the second round, the motion was, “Contemporary Nigerian media prioritise political interest over public interest.” The 300-level students supported the motion, while the 400-level students opposed it.

At the end of the debate, the 100-level students emerged winners in the first round, while the 400-level students won the second round. Certificates were presented to all participants.
