OOU SUG REJECTS ₦10,000 INTERNET FEE, URGES STUDENTS TO RESIST PAYMENT

By Oluwatobiloba Adeosun

The Students’ Union Government (SUG) of Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), Ago-Iwoye, has rejected the university management’s decision to introduce an annual ₦10,000 internet subscription fee for the 2025/2026 academic session.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the union condemned the policy, describing it as an “unjust and inconsiderate burden” on students who are already facing economic hardship.

“It is disappointing that instead of finding ways to ease the financial pressure on students, the management has chosen to increase it under the guise of internet enhancement,” the statement read. “Internet access is not a privilege but a necessity for academic excellence. Students should not be made to pay separately for what the university is duty-bound to provide.”

The SUG also criticized the management for introducing the levy without consulting student representatives, saying such unilateral decisions erode trust between students and the administration.

The union has urged students not to pay the proposed ₦10,000 fee pending further dialogue with the school authorities. It vowed to resist any attempt to enforce the payment until a “fair and transparent agreement” is reached.

As of press time, the university management had yet to respond to the students’ position.
