The Diamond Generation has claimed the gold medal of Mass Communication Head of Department (H.O.D) competition 2025 edition after defeating Ascom Blazers three goals to one in the final.
The match, which took place at Estadio de Sun on Thursday, March 22, produced a fierce encounter as the 400-level team was not ready to lose consecutively to their juniors, who dunked them at the previous edition of the competition.
Diamond Generation goalkeeper, Akinsanya Benjamin, while speaking with Campus Mirror at the post-match interview, revealed that the match was a must-win for his team because the 200l team vowed to beat them twice in a row, which his team eventually prevented from happening.
"It was a must-win match, because in the last edition, the current 200l team evicted us in the semi-final stage, and they had already promised to defeat us twice in a row. It was something we did not want to happen, and we did not allow it to happen this time. I will attribute our victory to sheer determination, and to be honest, we have better players, and we knew their defense was weak, so, we targeted that, and it actually worked for us,” he said.
Meanwhile, Ascom Blazers coach Oladehinde Mojola admitted to his team's low energy in the game, but he remained optimistic towards the next edition of the competition.
"Playing against an energized team is so powerful; we did not play well in the first half due to low morale and low energy from the first goal but the second half was better. Moreover, we still have two more hod's cup to play, we have won it before and we will give it our luck the next edition,” he stated.
Furthermore, the match was graced by two lecturers from the department, Dr. Kunle Odule, and Dr. Salaudeen Kamoru, who revealed the strong role sports play in a person's life.
"Sport contributes to excitement, freedom, and the development of energetic young individuals ready to embrace their future. Sports also play a strong role in individual's lives, fostering confidence; people who engage in sport exhibit better confidence compared to those who are less sport-oriented," he noted.
