The joint committee of the Non-Academic Union of Allied and Education Institutions (NASU) and Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU)1 has added another eight weeks to its ongoing industrial action.
The Joint action committee (JAC) embarked on the industrial action on March 27, 2022, to foreground the implementation of their demands. However, on May 23rd, 2022, another month was added to the strike due to the deaf ears the Federal government turned to their demands.
A press release signed by the National President and the General Secretary of SSANU reads,
"The compliance of members, even in the face of the denials of our salaries, threats and harassment, has continued to give the national leadership the needed strength and focus to forge ahead on our demands."
“In view of the fact that government is still a long way from effectively resolving the issues in contention, it is only expedient that we allow the process to be fully concluded before calling for an end to the strike."
“Consequently, you are hereby informed that the strike has been extended by two months, within which we are hoping that all the contentious issues would have been effectively laid to rest. The two months extension is with effect from Friday, 24th June 2022."
The inconsistent issue of the Integrated Payroll and Personnel information system, unpaid earned allowances, delay in the renegotiation of the FGN, NASU, SSANU agreements, and non-payment of minimum wage arrears, poor funding of state universities, non-payment of retirement benefits to outgoing members of the unions are some of the demands SSANU and NASU wants from the government.
